Living in the Washington DC area and hearing names read and hirings and firings from the Redskins, you tend to roll with the punches so to speak. Unfortunately it was happening what seemed to be way too much, this was probably due to the fact that - well quite frankly the local news actually does report mainly on local news! The reality is that the same thing is happening in every city that has a professional sports organization and they in those local markets probably feel the same way! Having said that, when it was announced that the Redskins announced Morocco Brown as their new Director of Pro Personnel - I didnt think nothing of it. Until something inside me made me do a little digging, I had some questions that I would like to have answered. Was this another Snyder 'yes man'? Did this cat have credentials? You know the typical questions that are spawned on by the likes of a interesting organization and owner. Well after some research I found this cat to be very deep and comes with some clot and is respected across the league......so I decided I would share! Brown is a Hampton native, who as a freshman played three varsity sports was excepted and attended college at NC State as a linebacker. Even though he never made it to the next level that all college athletes dream of making it, that did not stop him. He did what a lot of us do every single day - take advantage of the opportunity before us. How so? As we all hear, its not what you know but who you know. This is true in Morocco's case, not that he is not or was not a worthy and capable candidate, but sometimes we are have to have to door of opportunity opened for us! By means of a family friend, Carl Francis, he got the door opened for him. That being done, the rest was up to him and Morocco did exactly what he was suppose to do - he blew away his interviewer, the then Player Personnel Director, Melvin Bratton who had this to say: "His football savvy and knowledge, he was just so impressive," That said - Brown got the intern job with the skins from 1999 - 2001. (Claim to fame while with the Redskins - Brown was a key component to getting Antonio Pierce signed) He soon moved on in 2001 to Chicago to be the assistant director of pro personnel for the Bears. It is said that he not only was a key in getting talent and helping the Bears reach the Super Bowl, but more importantly made an impression on the front office as a man! This is not new to him, for he made impressions on such players as Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders while they were both at the end of their awesome careers (prior to being skins), something that is unheard of. You very rarely hear of veteran players spending any time with front office members, let alone a intern! (How many hang out and seek conversation with interns or temps at our daily jobs? I rest my case!) All of this, all said and the most interesting and impressive thing about Morocco Brown - he has done this and accomplished this at the young age of 32! Do your thang Morocco Brown - make us all proud!!! |
